21 Individuals Charged for Beating and Killing Youth in Dhaka
In a shocking turn of events, charges have been filed against 21 individuals for allegedly beating and killing a mentally challenged youth, Tofazzal, at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University. The incident took place on the night of September 18th, when Tofazzal was reportedly attacked by a group of students, resulting in his tragic death.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to reports, on the fateful night, Tofazzal was loitering suspiciously near the gate of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall around 8 pm. A group of students from the university detained him, accusing him of theft. They then took Tofazzal to the guest room of the main building, where they allegedly subjected him to physical abuse, including beating him with sticks and rods, after accusing him of mobile theft. The victim, in a state of mental distress, was later taken to the hall’s canteen for a meal before being brutally assaulted in the guest room of the southern building, where he was found unconscious and later pronounced dead.
Charges Against the Accused
Among those charged in connection with the incident are former sub-Science and Technology editor of the hall’s student wing, Jalal Mia, Environmental Science student Sumon Mia, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science student Mottakin Sakin, Geography student Al-Hossain Sajjad, and residential students of the hall, Ahsan Ullah, Wajibul Alam, Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Shakib Raihan, Yasin Ali, Yamujjamal, Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobashwer Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohsin Uddin, and Abdullahhil Kafi.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The investigation into the case was conducted by the Shahbagh police station inspector, Md. Asaduzzaman, who filed the chargesheet on January 1st. The trial is set to continue on February 2nd, where the accused will have to appear before the court to face the charges against them.
