Electoral Misconduct Unveiled by DUDOK

The Election Commission is under scrutiny as the Election Commission Commission (DUDOK) has revealed irregularities in the purchase of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). On Sunday, following an allegation, a team of three members from DUDOK launched an investigation into the Election Commission (EC) regarding the purchase of EVMs.

Questionable Procurements and Investigations

According to Nur Alam Siddique, Assistant Director of the organization, the Election Commission’s purchase of EVMs has come under scrutiny by DUDOK. In 2018, one hundred fifty thousand EVMs were purchased, with five hundred machines being found to be faulty. The EC has stored these machines at ten regional offices, the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory, and the Election Commission. Randomly selecting three machines, we found one to be dysfunctional while the rest were operational.

Storage and Maintenance of EVMs

The EC has safeguarded sixty-two thousand EVMs in six hundred eighteen BMTF offices and regional offices. Record collections have been made regarding the procurement of some of these machines, with requests for the remaining documents submitted. Allegations of overpricing for certain machines have been noted, and investigations are pending upon receipt of the requested documents.

Expert Consultations and Technical Failures

Siddique further explained that the discrepancies found in the records could potentially indicate irregularities. The Commission has assured the supply of data and evidence, and IT experts will be consulted if necessary. A technical fault was identified in one machine during our inspection, raising concerns about the reliability of the EVMs.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability

The Election Commission must address these concerns to maintain transparency and accountability in the electoral process. DUDOK’s investigation sheds light on the importance of proper procurement and maintenance practices to uphold the integrity of the electoral system. As the issue unfolds, it will be crucial for all parties involved to cooperate and ensure a fair and transparent resolution.
