In the memory of equality, my friends, July was our strength, we used to think about it in bad times.
On Saturday, in the brightness of the candlelight organized in Dhaka University, the mother of equality passed away while in high school. Then friends became her family. During Eid, each friend would visit each other’s homes. In bad times, what we thought about was equality.
In this way, remembering equality, their friends, political activists, pioneers, and followers were commemorating it. On Saturday (May 17), at Dhaka University, after the candlelight event in memory of equality, they held onto their memories of equality.
The student Shahriar Alam Samy of Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research, who was killed in a knife attack by miscreants in Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Wednesday, was remembered for his equality. Since this incident, his teachers, friends, and political activists have been demanding justice for the murder of equality.
Samy’s long-time friend Nafis Al Sheikh. He is studying in the Organization Strategy and Leadership Department of the 18-19 session at the university. When talking about equality, he said, “Equality has seen death from close quarters several times. It never discriminated between a beggar or a rich person; it never created differences among people.”
He said, “In any friend’s bad times, what we thought about was equality. In July, equality was our strength. And we used to think that no one could harm us. They wouldn’t be able to leave us behind.”
Another friend of equality, Mashrul Alam Shubh, said, “For equality, only a few people have come here today. Yet, even when the police attacked the students at Muhsin Hall at Dhaka University, equality stood in protest.”
He said, “We remember the events of July 15, 16, and 17. Equality did not fear. It always came first. Today, because of boys like equality, the government is running the country. The Vice-Chancellor-Professor of the University is running it.”
Another friend of his, Sohel Rana Sabbir, said, “If there is injustice anywhere in the country, an immediate protest is held at Dhaka University. However, after the murder of equality, we could not stand together.”
A political activist of the student wing, Aabid Hasan Mishu, went to pay his respects and broke down in tears. He said, “We have fought shoulder to shoulder for a long time, today there is no equality. Yet, many have tried to justify the murder of equality. His character assassination has been attempted. Until the trial of the equality murder, we will not go home.”
At this time, the Departmental Editor of the student body, Wasim Tami, the Deputy Editor of Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, Mehedi Hasan, the Departmental Editor of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Shakib Biswas, the President of a section of the Socialist Student Front of Dhaka University, Mozammel Haque, and the leader of the Student Federation of Dhaka University, Armanul Haque, were present.
So, that’s the story folks. Remembering equality, fighting for justice, and standing together in times of adversity. Let’s hope for a better future where equality prevails.
