The Government Edward College in Pabna recently celebrated the golden jubilee of its Sociology Department with great pomp and grandeur. The festivities marked the completion of 25 years since the department’s inception, culminating in a joyous reunion of past and present students and faculty members.
Colorful Procession and Festivities
The four-day celebration kicked off with a vibrant procession on Thursday morning, attracting teachers and students who paraded through the campus. The procession, starting in front of the department’s building, wound its way through the city to the Martyr Abdul Chattar Memorial Square on the campus’ administrative building courtyard. The procession featured elephants, horse-drawn carriages, ox carts, musical bands, and various banners, creating a spectacle to behold. The festivities concluded on the campus field with student performances, flashlight mob, winter clothing distribution, and a discussion session.

Dr. A.K.M. Shawkat Ali Khan, the head of the department, presided over the celebrations with College Principal Dr. M.A. Abdul Awal Mia as the chief guest. The discussion session included speeches from Vice-Principal Mr. Abdul Awal, General Secretary of the Teachers’ Council Mr. Mahbub Hasan, and representatives from various student organizations. The event also saw former and current teachers being honored with garlands and well-wishes from the students.

The Sociology Department at Government Edward College was established in 1898, with classes commencing in 1999. Over the years, 24 batches of students have completed their education under the department’s guidance. Currently, the department has around 180 students pursuing their studies. The jubilee celebrations brought together 130 students who registered for the event, showcasing the enduring legacy of the department and the strong bond shared by its alumni.
