Arrest of Alleged ULFA (I) Cadre in Manikchhari Forest

In a recent operation conducted by joint security forces in Manikchhari forest in Khagrachhari, an individual named Marma (30) was apprehended. The arrest took place on Monday, January 13th, in the afternoon, in the Garamchhari area of the upazila.

The detained individual is identified as the son of a man named Manpru Marma, a resident of the Mayurkhil area in the upazila. Reports suggest that he is a collector for the banned outfit known as the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I).

Weapons Seized During the Operation

According to the police, the arrested individual had been involved in various illegal activities, including extortion under the guise of being a collector for the ULFA-I. Based on intelligence reports, a joint security operation was launched in the area, leading to the apprehension of Marma.

During the operation, a local-made pistol, three rounds of ammunition, and an Android phone were recovered from the individual. Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan Rubel, an official at the Manikchhari police station, stated that during preliminary interrogation, the arrested person admitted to being a member of the ULFA-I. Legal action will be taken against him for possession of illegal firearms.

Legal Proceedings and Future Actions

Rubel further mentioned that after filing a case under the Arms Act, the arrested individual will be presented before a competent court for further legal proceedings. The incident has raised concerns about the presence of insurgent groups in the region and the need for enhanced security measures in forested areas.

The arrest of the alleged ULFA-I cadre with weapons underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in combating insurgencies and maintaining law and order in remote regions like Manikchhari forest. It highlights the importance of coordinated efforts among security agencies to address such threats effectively.
