Final List of Rivers and Canals to be Released on Pohela Boishakh: Adviser Rizwana

Are you ready for some exciting news? The final list of rivers and canals, including local names, is set to be released on Pohela Boishakh, according to Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan. This announcement comes after obtaining a preliminary list of over 1,100 rivers and canals from divisional commissioners, with ongoing verification and selection processes.

Key Details Revealed

During a special conference on ‘River and Water Management,’ organized by Bangladesh Environmental Action Network (BEAN) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University’s TSC Auditorium, Adviser Rizwana highlighted the importance of defining boundaries for canals, rivers, and water bodies across the 64 districts. This strategic delineation aims to prevent future encroachments and ensure sustainable water management practices.

Challenges and Solutions

Addressing the complex water management issues in Jashore, Adviser Rizwana emphasized the urgent need for deepening and reinforcing the embankments of the Amodango Canal. She described the current situation where sluice gates have caused waterlogging due to differences in water levels inside and outside the gates, leading to flooding. To tackle these challenges effectively, she proposed extensive excavation and reinforcement of the Amodango Canal, acknowledging the resettlement needs and time constraints involved.

Future Plans and Projects

Looking ahead, Adviser Rizwana expressed optimism about resolving the water management issues in Bhobodoh by enabling efficient water drainage from 80% of the affected area by January 25. This initiative aims to facilitate agricultural activities and prevent further water-induced disruptions in the region.

In response to a participant’s inquiry regarding the construction of the Muchapuri Regulator in Noakhali, Adviser Rizwana shared insights about the ongoing feasibility study, expected to conclude by April. She highlighted the seasonal challenges involved in this project and the critical role of timely assessments in launching essential infrastructure developments.

As the conference concluded, Dr. M. Shahidul Islam, Co-Chair of the event and Vice-Chancellor of BEAN, presented the primary research findings on river and water management, underscoring the collaborative efforts of BEN and BEAN in fostering global environmental stewardship.

Stay tuned for the official release of the comprehensive list of rivers and canals on Pohela Boishakh, marking a significant step towards sustainable water resource management in Bangladesh. Let’s join hands in preserving our water heritage for future generations.
