The capture of Chhatra League leader Rabby for the Hajiganj murder case has sent shockwaves through the community in Chandpur. The police apprehended the district vice-president and general editor of Hajiganj Poura Chhatra League, Mehedi Hassan Rabbi, on Thursday based on confidential information. The arrest was confirmed by Mohammad Mahiuddin Faruq, the officer-in-charge of Hajiganj Police Station.
Rabby’s connection to the vandalism and looting incident at the shop of former Awami League youth leader Mizanur Rahman Selim in Hajiganj on August 4, following the fall of the government, was a significant factor in his arrest. Under Rabby’s leadership, a violent attack was carried out on students and the public during the July-August uprising, leading to further scrutiny of his involvement in the case.
The brutal murder of Azad Sarkar in front of his residence in the Toragor area of the Pourashava on August 4, followed by the filing of a murder case by his son, Ahmed Kabir Himel, who is the ward leader of the Pourashava, marked a turning point in the investigation. In this case, 15 individuals, including Chhatra League leader Rabby, were named, while 20 to 25 others were listed as unidentified suspects.
Additionally, on the same day as the murder, there was a robbery and vandalism at the electronics showroom and warehouse of youth leader Mizanur Rahman Selim in East Bazar area of Hajiganj. The shop owner claimed a loss of nearly 1.5 crore taka. Following this incident, a case was filed at Hajiganj Police Station on August 20, naming 74 individuals, including Rabby, and listing 150 unidentified suspects.
Officer-in-charge Mohammad Mahiuddin Faruq of Hajiganj Police Station stated that based on covert intelligence and technological assistance, Mehedi Hassan Rabbi, the suspect in the murder, looting, and vandalism case, was arrested in Dhaka. After the legal process in Dhaka concludes, he will be brought to Hajiganj, as per the information provided by the officer.
