arrests-made-in-demra-auto-rickshaw-driver-murder-case

In Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, a tragic incident unfolded in Demra, where an auto-rickshaw driver, Ushan Mia, fell victim to a brutal murder. The Demra Police apprehended five active members of the auto-rickshaw gang involved in the heinous crime.

The apprehended suspects were identified as Habibur Rahman, also known as Habib (34), Mo. Falan Bhuiya, also known as Akash (29), Akhi Aktar (32), Mo. Nazim Hossain (42), and Mo. Aman Hossain (37). The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Media and Public Relations of the DMP, Mohammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed this information on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

According to sources at the Demra police station, Ushan Mia from Gaibandha had been operating an auto-rickshaw for a living in the Kalibari area of Rajarbag for an extended period. On the evening of January 21, he set out with passengers in his auto-rickshaw but did not return. The next morning, his lifeless body was discovered in the DND canal (Dhaka Wash Khal) in Demra. Following a complaint filed by Ushan Mia’s elder brother, Mo. Suja Mia, a murder case was registered at the Demra police station.

Further investigation revealed that on the day of the incident, Habibur Rahman, along with several others, took Ushan Mia in his auto-rickshaw from Shahbag to Demra. Upon reaching their destination, Habib attempted to render Ushan unconscious by administering 4-5 sleeping pills. When Ushan did not lose consciousness, they resorted to fatal force, resulting in his demise near the DND canal. Later, they sold the auto-rickshaw to Mo. Aman Hossain in the Mugda area for 45,000 taka and divided the money among themselves.

In connection to this criminal ring, three additional members, Mo. Akhi Aktar, Mo. Nazim Hossain, and Mo. Aman Hossain, were arrested by the Demra police on January 31 for their involvement in auto-rickshaw theft and sale. Currently, they are in custody awaiting trial.

The arrested individuals, targeting poor, vulnerable, and unsuspecting battery-operated auto-rickshaw drivers, lure them into their rickshaws on the pretext of hiring a ride. Subsequently, they intoxicate the drivers with sleeping pills at convenient locations, inducing unconsciousness through deception, intimidation, or violence, and sometimes resorting to murder, before stealing the auto-rickshaws. They later sell the stolen vehicles at a low price to Mo. Aman Hossain.

In a poignant turn of events, these criminals exploit the trust and vulnerability of hardworking individuals trying to earn an honest living. The ease of operation and simple technology of battery-operated auto-rickshaws make them a prime target for such nefarious activities, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safety precautions in everyday life.

As the investigation progresses, the authorities are working diligently to bring these criminals to justice and ensure the safety and security of all citizens. The arrest of these individuals sheds light on the urgency of addressing such criminal activities and protecting the livelihoods of honest, hardworking individuals striving to make ends meet.
