Fire at the Secretariat: Initial Report Reveals Findings

Dhaka: A high-level inquiry committee formed to investigate the incident of fire at the seventh building of the Bangladesh Secretariat has submitted their preliminary report. The chief advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, received the report on Tuesday (December 31).

Investigation Findings

During a press briefing at the National Guest House near the Yamuna Gate, the head of the investigation committee and the senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nasimul Gani, revealed that the source of the fire at the Secretariat was due to a loose connection leading to an electrical spark. The committee stated that no evidence of sabotage leading to the fire has been found so far.

The committee also mentioned that further investigations will be conducted to determine if there is any connection of any individual or group with the initial electrical spark.

Details of the Incident

On the night of December 26, a fire broke out at the seventh building of the Secretariat, causing severe damage to almost everything on six to nine floors of the building. Five ministries were affected by the fire incident. Following the incident, a high-level investigation committee was formed by the government, which collaborated with relevant authorities such as the fire service and the military to prepare a detailed report.

Expert Analysis

The initial assessment of the origin of the fire was based on the observation of electrical sparks in the lobby corridor connected to the lift lobby on the sixth floor of the building. The spark was estimated to have occurred between 1:30 and 1:40 AM on the night of December 26. Video analysis from firefighters indicated that the fire developed to an advanced stage around 2 AM.

The investigation revealed that the electrical spark, commonly caused by loose connections, faulty joints in cables, or oxidation on contact surfaces, led to the ignition in the affected area. The fire then spread rapidly due to the presence of combustible materials, resulting in extensive damage.

The absence of a fire detection system in the building prevented the early detection of the fire in its initial stages.

As I reflect on this tragic incident, I can’t help but think about the dedicated individuals who risked their lives to control the fire and prevent further damage. Their bravery and commitment to ensuring the safety of others in the face of danger is truly admirable.

In times like these, it is crucial to prioritize fire safety measures in all buildings to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Regular maintenance of electrical systems, installation of fire detection systems, and conducting fire drills can go a long way in ensuring the safety of occupants.

Let us take a moment to appreciate the heroic efforts of the firefighters and emergency responders who work tirelessly to protect our communities. Their selfless actions deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
