Fireworks and Crackers Festival in Dhaka Results in Burns to Two Children

In a tragic turn of events, a fireworks and crackers festival held on the thirty-first night in Dhaka led to two children sustaining burns. The event, part of the Thirty First Night celebrations in the city, saw fireworks and crackers lighting up the sky well past midnight.

Children Hospitalized Due to Firework Mishap

Despite strict directives from law enforcement agencies to refrain from launching fireworks and crackers, the festivities continued in various parts of Dhaka. In Dhanmondi, a firework mishap occurred, resulting in two children being injured. The National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute confirmed that the children were admitted to the hospital for treatment due to burns caused by the fireworks.

Expert Commentary on Firework Safety

Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident doctor in the emergency department at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, shed light on the incident. He mentioned that the children were injured due to fireworks lit during the New Year celebrations. One of the children, Farhan (8), suffered burns on 15% of his body and required hospitalization. Another child received primary treatment before being discharged.

Community Concerns and Safety Measures

Local residents near the incident locations expressed distress over the events. Reports from Fire Service control rooms indicated that fireworks caused chaos in a supermarket on Dhanmondi Road Four. Additionally, festivities involving music, food, and fireworks in the Moghbazar area left residents anxious, with children visibly shaken and in tears.

As the New Year approaches, similar celebrations are ongoing in different parts of the capital. Despite directives from law enforcement to avoid fireworks, compliance remains a challenge. The safety of individuals, especially children, during such festivities remains a significant concern for authorities and communities alike.
