Fishing in Meghna River: Police Injured, Arrests Made
Three police officers were injured and thirteen individuals were arrested during an incident involving fishing in the Meghna River, as reported in a local newspaper. The altercation occurred in Lakshmipur, amid a ban on fishing activities in the area, leading to the detainment of the individuals involved. Among those injured were Sub-Inspector Sohel Ahmed, Constable Jahangir, and Trailer Sailor Jamal Hossain from the Marine Police. The situation unfolded on Saturday night in the vicinity of Maju Chowdhury’s Hat in the Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, where individuals were found engaging in fishing activities in the river.
According to Sub-Inspector Sohel Ahmed, a team of Marine Police was dispatched upon receiving information about the unauthorized fishing. However, the situation took a violent turn when the individuals resisted arrest and attacked the police officers. As a result, three officers, along with two additional police personnel and a trailer sailor, sustained injuries. Following the incident, a police operation led to the apprehension of thirteen individuals involved in the illegal fishing activities.
The detained individuals were subsequently presented before the court, where charges were filed against them for violating the laws related to the conservation of hilsa fish, as well as for assaulting the police officers. The court ordered their remand for further investigation into the matter. The injured police officers were promptly taken to the local hospital for medical treatment.
In a related development, to protect the hilsa fish population and enhance its production, a ban on all types of fishing activities in the Meghna River has been imposed from March 1st to April 30th. In line with this directive, the Department of Fisheries and law enforcement agencies have been conducting regular patrols along the river to enforce the ban and prevent illegal fishing practices.
