The Dhaka-Lakshmipur-Raypur highway, a critical lifeline for commuters and goods transport between Dhaka and Chittagong’s southern regions, is currently in a deplorable state. The road, stretching 18 kilometers from Chandraganj Bazar to Lakshmipur Bus Terminal, another 14 kilometers from Lakshmipur to Raypur, and approximately seven kilometers from Raypur to the border market of Raypur-Faridganj, is riddled with challenges that endanger safe travel for thousands of vehicles daily. The deteriorating condition of the road has led to the formation of large potholes, making travel a hazardous ordeal, with dust clouds engulfing the surrounding areas and inconveniencing the local population.

Challenges and Controversies

Local sources reveal that while there have been efforts to repair the road using traditional methods like pitch and macadam, recent attempts to lay cement blocks have sparked controversy among commuters. The use of soil and the subsequent increase in dust levels have not only exacerbated environmental concerns but have also drawn criticism from the public. The ongoing debate regarding the necessity of permanent road rehabilitation versus quick fixes has left the community divided on the best course of action.

Community Perspectives and Concerns

Mahmudul Hasan, a bank employee, shared his daily struggle navigating the road from the Lakshmipur Bus Terminal to Mandari Bazar, highlighting the worsening conditions caused by the recent construction work. He emphasized the detrimental impact on public health due to increased dust levels and the potential dangers posed by the current road situation. Abdul Matin, a resident of the Islampur market area, expressed concerns about the unregulated laying of cement blocks and its adverse effects on road safety and public well-being.

Future Prospects and Solutions

While local officials have proposed a development project to expand the road to four lanes, spanning 18 kilometers from the Lakshmipur Bus Terminal to Chandraganj Bazar, and a separate project for the PM (Major Road) from the bus terminal to Raypur, concerns remain about the timeline and execution of these initiatives. With an estimated cost of around 450 crore taka, the projects aim to address the longstanding issues of road congestion and infrastructure inadequacies. However, the exact timeline for project approval and implementation remains uncertain, leaving commuters and residents in limbo regarding the road’s future.
