Fire at Gazipur Factory by Beximco Workers: Transport Disruption
In a startling turn of events, workers at the Beximco Industrial Park in Gazipur have set fire to a garment factory and disrupted several vehicles in the entire area. The incident unfolded as the workers protested the factory’s refusal to reopen, claiming it was unjust. The workers had been protesting and gathering at the site for several days, demanding the factory’s reopening, but to no avail. On Wednesday evening, chaos erupted as hundreds of workers gathered in front of the factory. Subsequently, the workers blocked the Chandana-Nabinagar road and resorted to violence, setting fire to multiple vehicles in their agitation.
Local Journalists and Police Respond
Local journalists covering the scene were caught in the crossfire, with four journalists sustaining injuries during the workers’ rampage. The police, along with the workers and residents, reported that the Beximco Industrial Park in the Kashimpur area under the jurisdiction of the Gazipur City Corporation had become a hotbed of unrest due to the workers’ demands. The situation escalated as the workers protested in front of the factory, leading to the disruption of public transportation and violent clashes with the authorities.
Fire Services Called to Another Factory
Additionally, the workers targeted a factory named Gramin Fabrics in the Chandrabarti area of Kashimpur, setting it ablaze as well. Fire service workers rushed to the scene to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of the Kashimpur Police Station, reported that the workers had also set fire to a garment factory and multiple vehicles in the vicinity. The police took control of the situation by late Wednesday evening, restoring order and calm in the area.
Police Intervention and Subsequent Control
Mizanur Rahman, the Police Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, disclosed that the agitated workers had vandalized several vehicles and set them on fire. To disperse the crowd, tear gas shells and sound grenades were deployed by the police, effectively dispersing the workers and restoring peace. The situation was eventually brought under control, with the police maintaining a strong presence in the area to prevent any further escalation of violence.
