Husband Arrested for Murdering Wife Over Dowry Dispute in Rangpur
In a shocking turn of events in Rangpur’s Gangachara, a husband has been arrested on charges of murdering his wife after subjecting her to dowry-related abuse. The accused, Mushfiqur Rahman Sohag, has been taken into custody by the police following allegations made by the victim’s father.
History of Abuse and Tragic End
The victim, Sharmin Khatun, had married Sohag, the son of Mohibur Rahman from Mohubor Rahman’s family in Joydeb Madhyapara village in Gazghanta Union of the same upazila, nearly two years ago. Despite giving a dowry of one lakh taka in cash and other gifts during the wedding, Sohag remained dissatisfied. Within six months of the marriage, he started demanding more dowry from Sharmin, leading to physical and mental abuse. Sharmin had filed a case against him under anti-dowry laws and had been residing at her father’s house since. However, local mediation had resulted in her being taken back to her husband’s home six months ago, only for the abuse to resume.
Discovery of the Tragic Event
On Saturday night, the lifeless body of the newlywed bride was recovered from the Joydeb area of the Gazghanta Union after her father received a distressing call from Sohag’s residence, claiming she had committed suicide by hanging. Upon arriving at the scene, Sharmin’s family members found her body in a state of hanging, prompting the police to intervene and recover the deceased in a critical condition.
Allegations of Premeditated Murder
The family of the deceased has alleged that signs of physical assault were found on Sharmin’s body, indicating that she was murdered after being subjected to abuse. The victim’s father, Aowal Hossain, admitted to providing dowry during the wedding but expressed disbelief at the horrific fate that befell his daughter.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Confirming the veracity of the incident, Officer-in-Charge Al Emran of the Gangachara Model Police Station stated that the body was sent for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death. The accused husband has been arrested, and investigations are currently underway to uncover the truth behind the heinous crime.
