Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s daughter-in-law and a powerless Labour Party minister in the United Kingdom, Tulip Siddiq, has resigned. She handed in her resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer after accusing herself of misconduct against Sheikh Hasina.
On Tuesday (January 14th), according to a report by the British media outlet The Guardian, the MP of the Labour Party, Tulip Siddiq, submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Allegations of receiving multiple properties free of charge from close associates had put pressure on her.
In her resignation letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Tulip Siddiq wrote—
Dear Prime Minister,
Thank you for the faith you have shown in me over the past few weeks. I am grateful to your independent advisor, Sir Larry Magna, who promptly and comprehensively reviewed my self-initiated application and shared detailed information on my current and past financial and residential matters.
You are aware that, following a thorough review of the matter at my request, Sir Larry has ensured that I have not violated ministerial standards. He has mentioned that there is no evidence that my property or residency or any of my assets have come from any sources other than legal means.
My family relationships are well-known, and when I was appointed as a minister, I had submitted all information related to my relationships and personal interests to the government. After extensive consultation with officials, I was advised to mention in my declaration that I should maintain a distance from matters related to Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister and issues related to Bangladesh to avoid any conflict of interest. I assure you that I have always been completely transparent on these matters and have worked according to the advice of officials.
However, it is clear that my role as an economic secretary may create confusion in government work.
My loyalty will always be to this Labour government and its agenda of national transformation and revival. Therefore, I have decided to resign from my ministry.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work in your government. I will continue to support the government in any way possible.
Best regards,
Tulip Siddiq MP
Allegations suggest that Sheikh Hasina’s close associates were residing in properties ‘gifted’ to them. However, Tulip has vehemently denied this, claiming she ‘has not made any mistakes.’ Although the controversial politician Kemal Badenoch had called for Keir Starmer’s resignation a few weeks ago.
