In a shocking turn of events, a Rohingya youth named Mo. Saber, aged 20, was detained at the Potiya Upazila Election Office in Chittagong for seeking information about his uncle’s National ID card. The incident unfolded on Thursday morning, January 9th, when Saber arrived at the election office to inquire about the blocked ID card of Anwar Kamal, a relative.
Investigations revealed that Saber’s uncle, Anwar Kamal, had his ID card blocked in 2018 due to being recognized as a Rohingya. When Saber came to unlock the card, the election office officials, upon verifying and selecting information, deemed the ID card as suspended. Subsequently, Saber was questioned about his status, to which he acknowledged his Rohingya identity.
The Upazila Election Officer, Mr. Ariful Islam, disclosed that Saber had come to the Ukhiya Balukhali Camp in Cox’s Bazar in 2017 but later moved to Potiya Madrasa for studies in 2022. This time, he came to assist his uncle, Anwar Kamal, another Rohingya, in unblocking his ID. Should any suspicion arise, we will inform the police for further action, Mr. Ariful added.
