US Secretary of State Urges Ukraine-Russia Compromises

In a bid to de-escalate tensions between Ukraine and Russia post-war, a significant initiative emerges from Riyadh, marking a pivotal step towards normalizing relations between the two powers.

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, dubbed this meeting as the commencement of a “long and challenging journey.” He emphasized the necessity for both parties to make concessions in this process.

Security advisor Michael Waltz highlighted that discussions must ensure Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security are guaranteed. He stressed that it is imperative for Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine.

The absence of European Union involvement in these talks has sparked controversy. However, both Rubio and Waltz have refuted this claim.

Rubio pointed out that since the EU has imposed sanctions against Russia, their input is vital in these discussions. Waltz echoed the sentiment, stating, “We engage in discussions with our allies almost daily, and this process will remain uninterrupted.”

The possibility of a high-level summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was also deliberated during the meeting. Yet, Putin’s advisor, Yuri Ushakov, downplayed the likelihood of such an event in the near future.

Ushakov noted that while the discussions were generally constructive, it remains challenging to ascertain whether Russia and the US are moving closer to each other. The meeting was attended by Rubio, Waltz, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US special envoy Steve Whitehead, and Ushakov himself.

However, a significant question arises from this discussion as Ukraine was not invited to the table. Reports suggest that Ukraine’s non-participation may hinder the possibility of reaching a viable peace agreement. This issue could pose a major challenge in future negotiations.

The meeting has opened a door of opportunity for reducing tensions between the two superpowers. Yet, there is still a long way to go. The outcome of these talks and their impact on the end of the Ukrainian war and global politics remains to be seen.
