After a tumultuous three decades of marriage, AR Rahman suddenly shocked everyone by announcing his separation from his wife, Sayara Banu. The couple had been in the headlines for a while at that time.
Many people had expressed their opinions and reactions about their decision. Although AR Rahman and Sayara Banu had preferred to remain silent, Sayara Banu had already voiced her opinion. Not really sure why this matters, but it seems like Rahman decided to speak about the separation almost six months later in an interview.
He said, ‘Everyone has to go through a divorce at some point. Whether it’s God or a wealthy person on earth, no one is spared. So, why should I be any different?’ As his fame grew, AR Rahman seemed to have learned to embrace peace. In this context, he revealed that he had chosen peace over hatred.
After the news of the separation, AR Rahman faced various trolls on social media. Responding to this, he said, ‘If I say something about someone’s family, then someone will say something about my family. And we, as Indians, believe in this. No one should speak unnecessary things because everyone has a sister, wife, and mother. Even if someone makes derogatory comments about my family, I will tell God, ‘Forgive them and guide them on the right path.’
AR Rahman and Sayara Banu got married in 1995. They seemed to have had a love marriage. However, after spending a long 29 years together, they have three children – Khadija, Rahima, and Amin. Khadija has already gotten married.
